A Journey Beneath the Surface: An Oceanarium Complex, Sonadia Island
Sonadia is located at Kutubjom Union in Maheshkhali Upazila, 15 km north-west of Cox's Bazar District Headquarters. The latitude is 21.28”-21.33” and the longitude is 91.50”-91.56”. There is a canal separating Sonadia Maheshkhali from the island's center.
The Chakaria Badar Khali highway ends in zilla road which is connected with an approach road of 3m with site. Also, it is at 8km and 7.5 km travel distance from Gorokghata ghat (Maheshkhali) and Cox’s Bazar through jetty. The existing approach road from Ghatibhanga to Sonadia Island is broken and discontinued. BEZA repaired and continued this road to different zones of SE-TP (Sonadia Eco-Tourism Park).

Sonadia Island highlights its ecological significance as a vital hotspot in the Bay of Bengal. Coastal mangrove forests provide essential habitats for various marine and terrestrial species while offering natural protection against storms and erosion. The surrounding marine environment includes coral reefs, seagrass beds, and fish nurseries that sustain diverse marine life. Specific areas of the island are recognized as key habitats for both migratory and resident bird species, including sandpipers, plovers, and herons, emphasizing its importance for avian conservation. Sand dunes and coastal vegetation offer refuge for small mammals, reptiles, and insects while contributing to shoreline stability. Additionally, regions where endangered species, such as nesting sea turtles’ Green turtles, Olive Ridley turtles are found underline the island’s role in protecting rare and threatened wildlife.

Sonadia Island demonstrates a careful integration of ecological preservation and sustainable development, reflecting its environmental and economic importance. A major portion of the island is marked as ecologically critical or sensitive, including mangroves, sand dunes, wetlands, and tidal flats, which play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity and enhancing climate resilience. As part of this initiative, the oceanarium has been proposed as a prototype project. The designated site for the oceanarium covers 23.3 acres, carefully selected to align with the broader ecological and developmental goals of the masterplan.

Beneath the surface of the ocean lies a world teeming with life- a world alive with wonder. Fish move together like dancers in perfect rhythm, and ancient creatures drift slowly, bearing the quiet weight of their long existence. But now, the ocean carries the marks of our neglect. Plastic, oil, and overfishing speak quietly of our carelessness.
Sonadia island is enriched with diverse ecosystem. But this ecosystem is getting endangered due to the illegal acts like overfishing and illegal hunt of red crab, turtles, migratory birds by local people. Absence of controlled tourism and lack of public awareness and research facility, the problem remains as it is. This puts Sonadia under the list of ECA (Environmentally Challenged Area).

Sonadia Island’s topography is defined by its low elevation, generally ranging from sea level to just a few meters above, making it highly susceptible to tidal influences, flooding, and rising sea levels.
